Moroccan-French centre-back Yunis Abdelhamid has brought his playing career to an end after leaving AS FAR Rabat and joining the retired ranks at the age of 38.
The defender’s retirement was recorded on 3 August 2026, ending a senior career that included spells in France and Morocco. Abdelhamid most recently played for AS FAR Rabat, having joined the club from Saint-Etienne on a free transfer in July 2025.
He spent one season with Saint-Etienne after leaving Stade Reims, where he had established himself as a long-serving central defender. Abdelhamid joined Reims from Dijon in 2017 and helped the club win the French second-tier title in the 2017-18 season.
Across his career, Abdelhamid made 235 Ligue 1 appearances and played 195 times in Ligue 2. He also featured in the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, Morocco’s Botola Pro Inwi and the CAF Champions League.
His record includes 13 Ligue 1 goals and 12 in Ligue 2, while he also scored in Morocco’s top flight and in France’s lower divisions. Abdelhamid was predominantly a left-footed centre-back and stood 1.90m tall.
Born in Montpellier on 28 September 1987, he represented Morocco during his playing career. His club path began with AS Lattes before he moved to AC Arles B and then AC Arles-Avignon. He subsequently played for Valenciennes, Dijon, Stade Reims, Saint-Etienne and AS FAR Rabat.
Abdelhamid’s final move was not accompanied by a transfer fee, with his departure from AS FAR Rabat marking the conclusion of his club career. The former Reims captain leaves the game with more than 400 appearances across France’s first and second tiers.
The move from AS FAR Rabat into retirement was completed on 3 August 2026.
