Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez are reportedly set to marry next Saturday in Madeira, the Portuguese island where the Al-Nassr forward grew up, with the Cathedral of Funchal said to have been reserved for the ceremony.
Local reports claim the couple have booked the cathedral in Funchal, Madeira’s capital, for what is expected to be a large wedding. The celebrations are reportedly scheduled to begin at 15:00.
According to The Sun, the couple appear to have decided to hold their wedding on the island. Ronaldo, 41, was raised in Funchal and has long maintained close links with Madeira.
The Portugal captain and Rodriguez, 32, are also reported to have reserved a nearby hotel for the wedding reception. A source told The Sun: “Guests at the hotel have been told that two floors will be out of use on Friday and Saturday, as well as several bar areas.”
The arrangements have not been publicly confirmed by Ronaldo or Rodriguez.
Ronaldo met Rodriguez, an Argentine-Spanish model, in 2016. The pair became engaged in August last year, and reports of wedding preparations have increased since then.
Last week, the couple were photographed wearing diamond rings while boarding a yacht in Mallorca. The images added to speculation that their marriage plans had moved closer to completion.
Ronaldo has previously said that he and Rodriguez intended to marry after the World Cup. Portugal were eliminated from that tournament by Spain, who won the competition last month.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has also said Rodriguez is the only woman he has dated with whom he wanted to settle down.
Ronaldo and Rodriguez have built a family life together since beginning their relationship. Their reported plans to marry in Madeira would mean the ceremony is held in the city where Ronaldo spent his childhood before establishing himself as one of football’s most recognisable players.
The reported choice of Funchal Cathedral and a nearby hotel would allow the event to take place close to the area associated with Ronaldo’s early life. The hotel’s reported restrictions over Friday and Saturday indicate that preparations could involve a sizeable private gathering, although further details of the guest list and ceremony have not been released.
For now, the reports point to next Saturday as the proposed wedding date, with the Cathedral of Funchal identified as the venue and Madeira chosen as the setting.
