Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to marry Georgina Rodriguez in Madeira next weekend, with the ceremony expected to take place at Funchal Cathedral before the celebrations move to the five-star Savoy Palace hotel.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward is said to be preparing for a lavish wedding to Rodriguez, 32, in the Portuguese city where he was born and raised. The Sun reports that the couple will exchange vows at the cathedral, with the reception planned at the luxury hotel.
Reports had previously suggested that Ronaldo and Rodriguez would marry at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra during the coming weekend. However, those claims have been thrown into doubt after it emerged that the estate is due to remain open to the public over the current weekend.
The newspaper says the wedding will instead be held at Funchal Cathedral, where ceremonies commonly begin at 15:00, before guests travel to the Savoy Palace for the reception. The hotel has four restaurants and is expected to host the later part of the celebrations.
One source told The Sun: “Hotel guests have been informed that two floors will be unavailable for use on Friday and Saturday, along with several areas designated for bars.”
The reported choice of venue carries particular significance for Ronaldo, who grew up in Funchal. The city features a bronze statue honouring the footballer, while one of its hotels also bears his name.
Ronaldo’s net worth has been estimated at between $1.2bn and $1.4bn, but returning to his home city is understood to have strong emotional importance. He grew up in poverty and shared a bedroom with all of his siblings before leaving home at the age of 11 to join Sporting CP.
The Portugal international has built a career that has taken him from Sporting CP to some of the biggest clubs in European football and, more recently, to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. He is now preparing for a significant personal occasion in the city that shaped his early life.
The reported wedding plans have not been officially confirmed by Ronaldo or Rodriguez. However, the details concerning the cathedral, the Savoy Palace and restrictions on parts of the hotel have led to renewed speculation that the ceremony will take place in Madeira next weekend.
