Young Pharaohs aim to maintain momentum as group leaders Morocco present stern test
Egypt’s youth national team will face a decisive encounter against Morocco national under-17 football team on Monday, as the North African qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations continue in Libya.
The match, scheduled for 16:00 local time, represents a crucial step in Egypt’s campaign, with both sides competing for top position in the group. The tournament is part of the qualification pathway for the continental competition, adding further significance to the fixture.
Egypt, represented by their 2009-born squad, come into the game on the back of a narrow but valuable victory over Tunisia national under-17 football team. That result secured three points and placed them second in the standings after their opening match.
Morocco, however, currently lead the group with six points, having recorded two wins from two matches against Tunisia and Algeria national under-17 football team. Their strong start sets up a direct contest for control of the group.
Momentum and tactical discipline key for Egypt
The Egyptian side, guided by head coach Hussein Abdel Latif, will be aiming to build on their positive start and take a significant step towards qualification.
Abdel Latif expressed satisfaction with his team’s opening performance, highlighting the importance of beginning the campaign with a victory, particularly after missing the first round of fixtures. He described the win over Tunisia as a strong foundation for what lies ahead.
The coach acknowledged that preparations had not been straightforward. With the domestic league for the age group concluding only recently, the technical staff were required to assemble the squad quickly and organise friendly matches against Tanzania to improve match fitness and cohesion.
Despite the narrow scoreline in their opening game, Abdel Latif suggested that Egypt could have secured a more comfortable victory, pointing to a missed penalty as a key moment. He also outlined his tactical approach, noting that the team initially relied on attacking through the flanks before adjusting their style of play in the second half.
Egypt adopted a more cautious approach after the break, focusing on protecting their lead. Abdel Latif emphasised that tactical discipline and the players’ fighting spirit were central to securing the result—qualities he believes will be vital in the upcoming matches.
Morocco provide significant test
Facing Morocco now presents a markedly different challenge. With two wins already secured, the group leaders have demonstrated consistency and attacking strength, making them formidable opponents.
For Egypt, the fixture offers an opportunity not only to close the gap at the top of the table but also to make a statement about their credentials in the competition. A victory would significantly strengthen their position in the qualification race.
Qualification hopes hang in the balance
As anticipation builds, the match is widely viewed as a true test of Egypt’s young squad. With momentum on their side but facing a well-organised Moroccan team, the outcome could prove pivotal in shaping the group standings.
For the Young Pharaohs, maintaining their winning run will be essential if they are to secure a place in the Africa Cup of Nations. Monday’s encounter, therefore, carries weight far beyond a single result—it may define the trajectory of their qualifying campaign.
