WAFCON 2026: Senegal and Kenya battle for survival in crucial Group A clash

Senegal and Kenya will meet in a decisive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group A encounter on Thursday, with both teams needing a positive result to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The two sides face off at the Rabat Olympic Stadium at 17:00 GMT knowing that another defeat could severely damage their chances of progressing in the tournament.

Senegal enter the fixture under pressure after beginning their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Algeria, while Kenya suffered an even heavier setback, falling to a 4-0 defeat against hosts Morocco in their opening match.

With both teams still searching for their first points, Thursday’s meeting has taken on the importance of a knockout fixture despite arriving only in the second round of group matches.

Senegal coach Mame Moussa Cissé remains confident his team can recover from their opening disappointment and believes maintaining their identity will be key against Kenya.

“We know Kenya’s strengths, but the most important thing is to stay true to our playing style. If we play to our strengths, we can get the result. We’ve analyzed this team and prepared a suitable tactical plan. Despite the loss, we’ve taken away some positives,” Cissé said.

The Senegalese coach believes his side showed encouraging moments despite failing to secure a result against Algeria and insists the team has learned valuable lessons from that opening defeat.

Senegal, who have regularly featured among Africa’s competitive women’s football nations, will be hoping their experience at continental level can help them navigate the pressure of Thursday’s encounter.

Kenya, meanwhile, arrive in Rabat looking to respond after a difficult start to their first Group A fixture.

The Harambee Starlets were beaten convincingly by Morocco but coach Beldine Odemba remains optimistic about their chances of turning their campaign around.

“Senegal is a different team. We’ve never played them before. We’ll have to adapt our approach, but we still have a chance,” Odemba said.

Kenya will be aiming to produce a much-improved defensive performance after conceding four goals against the hosts, while also finding a way to create more attacking opportunities.

The meeting between the two teams will be their first encounter in the tournament, adding another layer of uncertainty to a fixture where neither side can afford to be overly cautious.

A victory would provide a major boost for either team and could reshape the Group A standings heading into the final round of matches.

For Senegal, the objective is to recover from their opening loss and stay in contention for the quarter-finals. For Kenya, it is an opportunity to respond after a difficult introduction to the competition.

The match kicks off at the Rabat Olympic Stadium on Thursday, July 30, at 17:00 GMT.
