Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium has given Amakhosi a timely boost ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.
Fernando Da Cruz’s side secured the trophy in Phokeng on Sunday thanks to a first-half strike from Mfundo Vilakazi, and will now go into their league opener against Kruger United in Mbombela on Saturday, 1 August, with renewed belief.
Though billed as a friendly, the Toyota Cup contest offered Kaizer Chiefs a competitive examination against strong opposition, and provided early evidence that work under new coach Da Cruz is beginning to bear fruit.
Vilakazi’s moment of quality decides tight contest
The decisive moment came in the 17th minute, when Vilakazi produced a composed finish after Scottland failed to clear a cross from Lebohang Maboe.
A loose ball dropped invitingly inside the area, and Vilakazi controlled it on his chest before driving past defender Tijani Al-Ameen and steering a measured shot beyond the goalkeeper into the far corner.
That individual piece of skill ultimately separated the sides in a match in which Kaizer Chiefs showed improved structure and fluency following their pre-season camp in Spain.
New signings impress as Amakhosi show balance
Kaizer Chiefs displayed encouraging organisation off the ball and sharper passing combinations in possession, suggesting Da Cruz’s ideas are beginning to take hold.
New arrival Adolf Mtasingwa produced a steady debut in midfield alongside Maboe, contributing both defensively and in build-up play. On the right, Thabo Monyane’s speed and direct running repeatedly stretched Scottland’s back line and offered an outlet on the counter.
In defence, the pairing of Bradley Cross and Inacio Miguel dealt confidently with most of Scottland’s attacking threats. Behind them, goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was alert whenever danger arose, reading the game well and coming off his line quickly to snuff out potential chances.
Second-half changes but Chiefs hold firm
Both coaches used the second half to rotate their squads, making several substitutions as the match progressed. The alterations gave opportunities to fringe players and altered the rhythm of the game, with Scottland seeing more of the ball after the interval.
Despite that territorial advantage for the Zimbabwean champions, Kaizer Chiefs remained compact and difficult to break down, protecting their lead with disciplined defending.
Etiosa Ighodaro and Wandile Duba added energy in forward areas for Amakhosi, making positive runs and looking to press from the front. Vilakazi and Luke Baartman continued to pose a threat on the break, offering pace and movement whenever Chiefs counter-attacked.
Crucially for Da Cruz’s side, they maintained their shape and concentration to close out the match and lift the Toyota Cup.
Focus turns to Betway Premiership opener
While Da Cruz will be aware there is still refinement needed before competitive fixtures begin, both the performance and result in Phokeng will be viewed as a valuable step in Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations.
The win over Scottland FC not only delivers early silverware but also provides a psychological lift as Amakhosi turn their attention to the Betway Premiership.
