Boitumelo Radiopane has fired himself into contention for Orlando Pirates’ main striking role after scoring two crucial goals on the club’s pre-season tour of Spain.
The 24-year-old forward, long regarded as one of the Buccaneers’ brightest academy products, struck in a 2-1 win over Cadiz and then netted the winner in a 1-0 victory against Las Palmas, strengthening his case to become new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s first-choice No 9 for the 2026-27 campaign.
Radiopane has been on Pirates’ books for four years but has yet to establish himself as a regular starter in the senior side, spending time out on loan and struggling to consistently translate his prolific youth form to top-flight level.
Now, after an eye-catching pre-season, this could be the defining period of his career at the Soweto giants.
From academy sensation to senior breakthrough bid
Radiopane first rose to prominence in the DStv Diski Challenge, where he still holds the record for the most goals in a single season. He scored 25 times for Orlando Pirates in the 2021-22 campaign, a haul that marked him out as one of South Africa’s most exciting young attacking prospects.
Those performances brought widespread recognition, but converting youth dominance into senior success has proved far more challenging.
While Pirates kept faith with his potential, regular minutes in the first team have been limited. Loan spells were intended to accelerate his development, yet he struggled to replicate the finishing form that once made him the standout striker in the club’s academy.
The current pre-season, however, suggests a turning point. Radiopane appears to be rediscovering the composure, movement and confidence in front of goal that defined his rise through the youth ranks.
Opportunity amid competition in Pirates’ attack
Ouaddou’s attacking options remain in flux, with the club expected to add further firepower before the transfer window closes in September.
Yanela Mbuthuma and Evidence Makgopa, both competing for minutes through the middle, have yet to find their sharpest form during pre-season. That has opened a window for Radiopane to move up the pecking order at a critical moment.
