Lionel Messi’s now-viral team talk before Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain was “purely tactical” and not a sign of dressing-room turmoil, according to the father of midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
The comments come after a short video clip of Messi’s words in the Argentina dressing room, broadcast by ESPN, triggered a wave of speculation on social media about a supposed internal crisis in the “Albiceleste” camp.
Speaking to Argentine radio in quotes carried by La Nacion, Carlos Mac Allister moved to quash the rumours, insisting there was no breakdown in harmony before Argentina lost 1-0 after extra time to Spain.
Viral clip sparks online conspiracy theories
In the footage, Messi is seen addressing his team-mates shortly before kick-off, saying: “هيا يا شباب، حافظوا على هدويكم. الاهم هو ان تحافظوا على هدويكم” – “Come on boys, stay calm. The important thing is that you stay calm.”
He then adds words that were seized upon by many fans and pundits online: “دعونا ننسى كل شيء. دعونا نلعب فقط. دعونا نركز على المباراة يا شباب” – “Let’s forget everything. Let’s just play. Let’s focus on the match, boys.”
Those phrases, stripped of context and widely shared, fuelled theories that Messi was attempting to defuse tension after a major internal incident in the hours leading up to the final.
The speculation grew so intense that it even unsettled members of the players’ families.
‘Even I started to wonder’
Carlos Mac Allister admitted he, too, briefly doubted what might have been going on inside the camp when he first saw the edited clip.
“I sent a message to Alexis asking him: What happened in the dressing room? Did something happen? If I myself had started to wonder, imagine what others must have thought,” he said.
According to Mac Allister Sr, his son immediately dismissed any notion of a bust-up or crisis in the squad and clarified the true content of Messi’s speech.
He explained that the captain’s words related strictly to how Argentina wanted to approach the game from a footballing perspective – and not to any off-field controversy.
‘It was about passing, movement and avoiding long balls’
Mac Allister’s father said Alexis had told him Messi was talking about “how to play the match from a tactical standpoint”: keeping the ball, moving intelligently, rotating positions and avoiding hopeful long balls or careless turnovers of possession.
He stressed that what appeared in the viral video was only a fragment of a longer technical talk, and that by being taken out of context, it lent itself to misinterpretation.
The short extract, he argued, opened the door to “baseless interpretations”, with online platforms amplifying unsupported narratives about divisions in the camp.
“What was said was part of the technical instructions before the match kicked off,” he insisted.
Spain’s superiority, not Argentina conflict
Despite the controversy that followed online, Carlos Mac Allister underlined that Argentina’s defeat in the final stemmed from Spain’s performance on the pitch, not from any internal rift.
He said all of Lionel Scaloni’s players had “given everything” in the showpiece but were confronted by an opponent that proved superior “on that particular night”.
By drawing a line under talk of a dressing-room crisis, Mac Allister’s remarks are likely to be welcomed within the Argentina set-up, which has repeatedly stressed unity and togetherness as the foundations of its recent success.
The episode also highlights how selective clips from inside team environments – once considered strictly off-limits – can drive powerful narratives in the social media era, even when those closest to the players say the reality is far more mundane: a captain, moments before a World Cup final, simply talking his team through the game plan.
