Senegalese defender Ibrahima Ba has returned to full training with Famalicao despite a proposed four-year move to Strasbourg collapsing over an alleged medical issue – a claim his camp firmly denies, as several major clubs, including Benfica, monitor his future.
Ba took part “without any limitation” in Monday morning’s session at Famalicao’s training centre, according to Portuguese media, signalling a return to business as usual after days of uncertainty over his next club.
The 22-year-old had been close to joining Strasbourg, coached by Hugo Oliveira, who was keen to reunite with a player he had previously worked with in Portugal. But the transfer unraveled at the final stage when a health problem was reportedly detected during the pre-signing medical tests.
Ba’s agent has rejected that version of events, insisting that the player has no health concerns. The disputed medical has further intensified interest in Ba, rather than cooling it, with Benfica and other unnamed foreign clubs continuing to track developments as the summer transfer window enters its final stretch.

« Ibrahima Ba est un jeune defenseur tres bon dans les duels, tres impactant. Il est rapide avec une bonne vitesse. Il est interessant dans la gestion de la profondeur », decrit-il.
Technically, Carvalho believes Ba already offers valuable tools for a modern centre-back.
« Avec le ballon, je ne dirai pas que c’est un expert de la relance, mais il a une plutot bonne relance notamment sur son jeu long. Il se distingue surtout par une qualite athletique », poursuit le recruteur.
This blend of speed, strength and youth has made Ba one of the most sought-after profiles on the market, helping to explain the tug of war that developed between Strasbourg and Benfica before the French club’s move fell through.
‘Very sought-after profile’ with big upside
Carvalho says Ba fits a template that top clubs across Europe are urgently seeking.
« C’est un profil tres recherche dans le marche. Il est jeune alors forcement il attire les clubs. Un defenseur jeune avec cette qualite suscite beaucoup d’interet parce que la marge de progression est grande », analyse Alexandre Carvalho.
Ba’s physical dominance in Portugal, where his pace and power often set him apart, is seen as both an asset and a challenge for the next stage of his development.
Work still to do on concentration and game intelligence
Despite the growing hype, Carvalho stresses that Ba is far from the finished article and has clear areas to improve if he is to fulfil his potential at the highest level.
« Pour son developpement, il est deja tres fort athletiquement alors sa marge de progression doit etre axee dans la concentration. Au Portugal, il etait tres au-dessus au niveau athletique alors c’etait un peu trop facile pour lui. Il devra encore travailler sur la vitesse, sur les duels. Peaufiner encore sa lecture de jeu dans les anticipations, developper son QI foot », detaille le recruteur.
In other words, while Ba’s raw tools are already attracting major clubs, his future value is tied closely to how quickly he can refine his concentration, positioning and decision-making in more demanding leagues.

Ba’s combination of a strong present and an even more promising future means his name is unlikely to disappear from transfer headlines in the coming weeks.
A return to full training at Famalicao shows he remains available for selection, but with Benfica and other foreign clubs still watching closely, a late-window move cannot be ruled out whether to remain in Portugal at one of its giants or to take a first step into another major European league.
