2026 World Cup: Díaz rewrites record books with historic assist tally

Morocco midfielder Brahim Díaz has written his name into World Cup history after becoming the first African player to register four assists in a single edition of the tournament.

The Real Madrid playmaker reached the milestone during a commanding display in Houston, where Morocco booked their place in the quarter-finals with a confident win over the co-hosts.

Díaz’s latest assist came in the 82nd minute, when he delivered a precise, defence-splitting pass that allowed Azzedine Ounahi to calmly finish and extend Morocco’s lead.

That moment marked his fourth assist of the tournament, confirming his place in the record books as the most productive African creator in a single World Cup campaign.

He is now second overall in the tournament assist rankings, behind Michael Olise, who leads the chart.

Díaz also played a crucial role earlier in the match, helping to set up Soufiane Rahimi for Morocco’s third goal, further underlining his influence in the attacking third.

The assist was his second decisive contribution in the match and added to a growing reputation for delivering in key moments on the biggest stage.

Across the tournament, Díaz has emerged as one of Morocco’s most important players.

While much of the attention has centred on the team’s goalscorers and defensive solidity, his creativity in midfield has quietly underpinned their success.

His ability to unlock opposition defences with vision and precision passing has been central to Morocco’s progress. From group stage matches through to the knockout rounds, he has consistently created opportunities in dangerous areas, allowing his teammates to thrive in front of goal.

The 3-0 win over Canada was another example of Morocco’s collective strength, but Díaz’s contribution stood out as a defining feature of the performance.

His awareness in tight spaces and timing of passes helped stretch the Canadian defence and open up scoring chances at key moments in the game.

Morocco’s run to the quarter-finals has been built on balance across all areas of the pitch, but Díaz’s influence in attack has added an extra dimension to their play.

His record-breaking tally now places him among the standout performers of the tournament and highlights his growing importance to the Atlas Lions.

As Morocco prepare for the next stage of the competition, Díaz’s form will be seen as a major asset, with his creativity continuing to play a decisive role in their historic World Cup campaign.
