Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic has urged supporters to get firmly behind the Desert Foxes as they prepare for a daunting opening test against defending champions Argentina national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the Group Stage encounter, Petkovic acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing his side but insisted football has repeatedly shown that surprises are always possible on the biggest stage.
Argentina enter the tournament as reigning world champions and among the favourites to lift the trophy once again. However, the Algerian coach believes his players must embrace the occasion rather than fear it.
“Now we have a match against a team that is considered the favorite, and not just against us, but probably for the entire competition. They are the reigning world champions and the match will be difficult. But as we have seen so far, it is not impossible to achieve something greater or to create an upset.”
Petkovic backs Desert Foxes to compete
