Algeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Bolivia in a World Cup warm-up match may have offered more than just a confidence boost ahead of the 2026 tournament. It also provided a glimpse into the tactical flexibility that coach Vladimir Petkovic could use when the Desert Warriors face Argentina in their opening match.
The Swiss coach oversaw two contrasting performances from his side during the friendly in Kansas City, with Algeria struggling in the first half before producing a dominant display after the interval. The dramatic change in approach and personnel has raised questions about how Argentina and coach Lionel Scaloni will prepare for a team capable of altering its identity within a single match.
The encounter ended with Algeria scoring four unanswered goals, including a second-half surge that completely overwhelmed Bolivia. While the result itself was significant, the manner in which it was achieved may prove equally important as the World Cup approaches.
Slow Start Raises Concerns
Petkovic began the match with a 4-3-3 formation.
Oussama Benbot started in goal behind a defensive line featuring Achraf Abada, Samir Cherki, Aissa Mandi and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Hicham Boudaoui, Nabil Bentaleb and Ibrahim Maza formed the midfield trio, while Riyad Mahrez, Mohamed Amine Amoura and Nadir Benbouali led the attack.
Despite the attacking line-up, Algeria struggled to find rhythm during the opening 45 minutes. The team’s tempo was slow and clear attacking patterns were largely absent.
Amoura and Benbouali, in particular, found it difficult to influence the match, while Algeria created only a limited number of opportunities. One of those chances fell to Amoura, but he was unable to convert.
The breakthrough eventually arrived just before half-time when defender Aissa Mandi scored to give Algeria a 1-0 lead.
Even with the advantage, questions remained about the overall performance, especially given the lack of attacking fluency displayed throughout the opening period.
The first half also saw the absence of defender Ramy Bensebaini, who missed the match because of a foot injury. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Benbot was rarely called into action due to Bolivia’s limited attacking threat.
Eleven Changes Transform the Match
The defining moment of the contest came at half-time when Petkovic made wholesale changes.
The Algerian coach replaced the entire team, introducing Melvin Mastel in goal, Rafik Belghali, Zinedine Belaid, Mohamed Amine Tougai and Joan Hadjam in defence, Ramez Zerrouki, Fares Chaibi and Houssem Aouar in midfield, and an attacking trio consisting of Adel Boulbina, Anis Hadj Moussa and Amine Gouiri.
The impact was immediate.
Algeria’s movement became sharper, their attacking play more aggressive and their overall tempo significantly higher. The midfield operated with greater energy and linked effectively with the forwards, allowing the Desert Warriors to take complete control of the game.
Gouiri scored twice during the second half, benefiting from two assists provided by Boulbina, while Hadj Moussa also found the net.
The three additional goals transformed a narrow lead into a convincing victory and highlighted the depth available to Petkovic ahead of the World Cup.
A New Challenge for Argentina
Perhaps the most important consequence of the performance is the uncertainty it creates for Algeria’s upcoming opponents.
Argentina’s coaching staff are expected to analyse Algeria’s recent matches as they prepare for the opening Group 10 fixture. However, the vastly different displays produced by Algeria’s first and second-half line-ups make that task considerably more complicated.
Petkovic has developed a reputation for altering systems, personnel and playing styles both during matches and from one game to the next. The victory over Bolivia reinforced that reputation, demonstrating his willingness to make bold adjustments when necessary.
For Scaloni and the reigning world champions, predicting which version of Algeria will appear in Kansas City may become a significant challenge.
Algeria and Argentina are scheduled to meet on 17 June at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in the opening round of Group 10. Following the performance against Bolivia, Petkovic’s tactical unpredictability could become one of the most intriguing storylines heading into the contest.
