The Republic of Congo has turned to one of African football’s most experienced coaching figures in a bid to revive its national team, with veteran French coach Claude Le Roy set to return as head coach of the Red Devils.
The appointment marks a familiar reunion between Le Roy and the Congolese national team, which he previously managed between 2013 and 2015.
This time, the 78-year-old returns alongside Senegalese coach Omar Daf, who has been named assistant coach as part of a broader project aimed at rebuilding the national side ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to information released by the country’s sports authorities, an official contract signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Brazzaville on 22 June.
The agreement will formally bind the Congolese state and the two coaches to the national team project.
The decision signals Congo’s determination to restore competitiveness to a side seeking a fresh start after recent struggles.
Authorities have identified qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as a key objective and believe Le Roy’s extensive experience in African football can help guide the process.
For Le Roy, the appointment adds another chapter to one of the most remarkable coaching careers on the continent.
The Frenchman has become synonymous with African football over the past four decades and is preparing for what will be his ninth spell in charge of an African national team.
His coaching journey has taken him across the continent, including stints with the national teams of Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo and Togo.
His first spell with Cameroon came between 1985 and 1988 before he returned to lead the Indomitable Lions again in 1998.
He later coached Senegal, Ghana, DR Congo, Congo and Togo, establishing himself as one of the most recognizable figures in African football management.
Le Roy has not held a coaching position for five years, making this return one of the most notable appointments in African football ahead of the next international cycle.
The inclusion of Omar Daf also adds a regional dimension to the project. The Senegalese coach will work closely with Le Roy as Congo attempts to strengthen its technical structure while nurturing a new generation of players.
Congolese authorities have indicated that the rebuilding process will focus on improving performance levels, strengthening discipline within the squad and creating pathways for local talent to emerge.
The objective is not only to compete in the short term but also to establish a more sustainable foundation for future success.
