Hugo Broos explains Nkota omission ahead of Panama friendlies

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has said the decision to exclude Mohau Nkota from the national squad for upcoming friendlies against Panama was taken to protect the player during what he described as a “very sad period” in his life.

Bafana Bafana are set to face the Central American side in two international matches as part of their build-up to the next FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

However, the absence of Nkota from the final squad list has drawn attention, given his recent involvement with the national team.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Broos explained that the 21-year-old midfielder is currently dealing with personal and professional challenges that have affected his readiness to compete at international level.

“When you talk about Mohau Nkota, I think it’s been a very sad period for the moment. Four weeks ago, I think, he lost his father,” said Broos.

The coach added that the player has also lost his place at his club in Saudi Arabia, which has compounded the situation.

“He lost also his position in the team in Saudi Arabia. Psychologically, he’s not really in good shape. I think it would be not good from our side to take him with the team and ask for performances.”

Broos suggested that placing additional pressure on the young player could be counterproductive, particularly given his limited experience at the highest level.

“You know how people are [if he can’t perform]. This is a young guy; he’s not an experienced player. Experienced players [can deal with that].”

He emphasised that the priority for Nkota should be to regain stability both personally and professionally before returning to the national setup.

“But for him, he has, first of all, the death of his father. Secondly, he has to win again the position in his team. Therefore, I think it’s better now that we leave him with his family.”

Broos confirmed that Nkota is currently in South Africa and has been in contact with the coaching staff.

“He’s in South Africa, I had him on the phone call. We leave him there, that he’s coming to peace again. I know with the talent he has that we see him back in a few months.”

While Nkota’s absence may be felt on the pitch, Broos has made clear that the long-term development and well-being of the player remain the priority.
