Zigiotti Olme gives Manchester United narrow WSL win over Liverpool

Julia Zigiotti Olme’s early goal earned Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Women’s Super League and secured back-to-back league wins for Eva Olid’s side.

The Sweden midfielder struck in the sixth minute at Progress with Unity Stadium after Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating gifted possession to her. Zigiotti Olme took a few touches to steady herself before lifting the ball over Keating, who was retreating towards her goal.

Liverpool responded strongly to the setback, but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding display from Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Cornelia Kapocs and Beata Olsson were both kept out by a superb double save before half-time. United also came close to extending their advantage when Jess Park’s deflected effort struck the crossbar.

Liverpool continued to create opportunities after the interval. Marie-Therese Hobinger tested Tullis-Joyce with a powerful effort from distance, while Jenna Clark failed to turn Natalia Ramos’ corner on target.

Manchester United missed a major chance to make the game safer when Elisabeth Terland’s curling attempt was pushed away by Keating. That proved insignificant, however, as United held on to claim all three points.

United continue revival under Olid

United’s result marks a significant improvement after they failed to win any of their opening three WSL matches, drawing one and losing two. That run included a 5-0 defeat by Chelsea, which increased the early pressure on Olid.

They have since responded with a 10-1 League Cup victory over Sheffield United, followed by a 2-1 WSL win against West Ham. The result against Liverpool means United have now won two league matches in succession and four games across all competitions.

The performance was not entirely one-sided, despite the result. Liverpool recorded the higher expected goals (xG) figure, leading 1.36 to 0.58, and managed eight shots on target. That was almost as many efforts on target as United had total attempts, with the hosts recording nine.

Tullis-Joyce’s contribution ultimately proved decisive. Her eight saves helped United preserve their first clean sheet in a WSL home match since September 2025.

The victory also ended an 11-game run in which Manchester United had conceded in every WSL home fixture.
