Van Bommel seeks $4.5m deal in Al Ahly negotiations

Egyptian giants Al Ahly are negotiating with former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel over a potential appointment as the club’s new sporting director, according to reports.

Discussions between the two parties are ongoing, with the record African champions seeking to strengthen their football operations ahead of the new season.

Reports indicate that Van Bommel has requested an annual salary worth $4.5 million as part of any agreement. Negotiations are expected to continue until Tuesday as both sides attempt to bridge the gap and finalise terms.

The 49-year-old has built a coaching career following his retirement from playing, having managed clubs in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

He most recently coached Belgian side Royal Antwerp, leading them to a historic domestic double during the 2022-23 campaign.

Van Bommel enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. He also captained the Netherlands national team and earned more than 70 international caps.

Should an agreement be reached, Van Bommel would take on a key strategic role at Al Ahly, overseeing football operations, recruitment and long-term sporting planning at one of Africa’s most successful clubs.

Al Ahly have continued to invest in their football structure in recent years as they seek to maintain their dominance domestically and on the continental stage.

While negotiations remain ongoing, no official announcement has been made by the club, and it remains unclear whether the parties will reach an agreement before the reported Tuesday deadline.

The outcome of the talks could prove significant for Al Ahly as they prepare for the next phase of their sporting project, with Van Bommel’s experience at both elite playing and managerial levels viewed as a major asset.
