UEFA to review Real Madrid documents in Barcelona’s Negreira case

UEFA has begun reviewing substantial documentation submitted by Real Madrid in relation to the Negreira case, but has not announced any finding or sanction against Barcelona.

The governing body said its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors had received the material and would assess it as part of an ongoing review. The announcement is a procedural development and does not establish wrongdoing by Barcelona.

The case centres on Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Real Madrid sent the documents to UEFA in recent months, providing fresh material for consideration in the long-running matter.

UEFA has not disclosed the contents of the documents or indicated when its review might be completed. The inspectors’ assessment is the next step identified by the governing body, and no decision has been announced.

Managing Madrid reported on Thursday, October 1, that Spanish press accounts suggested Real Madrid believes Barcelona could face some form of punishment. That expectation does not represent a UEFA decision, and there is no confirmed outcome or timetable for the process.

The report also cautioned that the review is unlikely to be resolved quickly. The latest development therefore concerns the receipt and examination of Real Madrid’s material, rather than a conclusion about whether Barcelona breached any rules.

The UEFA process is separate from other disputes involving the clubs. Florentino Perez’s legal dispute involving Barcelona forms another strand of the wider conflict and has no bearing on the outcome of UEFA’s review. Perez was also shown attending an Europa Press breakfast colloquium in Madrid.

Barcelona have faced scrutiny from football authorities in other circumstances, including an RFEF disciplinary investigation, but that process is distinct from UEFA’s examination of the Negreira case.

For now, UEFA’s position is limited to confirming that its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors will assess the documents supplied by Real Madrid. The reported allegations and expectations of a possible punishment remain separate from any established breach, finding or imposed sanction.
