Tshegofatso Mabasa has joined Moroccan champions Maghreb de Fes on a multi-year contract after leaving Orlando Pirates as a free agent.
The 29-year-old striker completed his move after undergoing medical assessments in Morocco, with the deal finalised on Monday. He becomes the first South African player to represent the Fes-based club.
Mabasa leaves Orlando Pirates after eight years with the Soweto giants, having scored 50 goals in 141 appearances and helped them win three MTN8 titles. His performances earned him a place in the club’s history and established him as one of South Africa’s most dependable forwards.
He will now lead the attack for Maghreb de Fes as the reigning Botola Pro League champions prepare for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign. The move gives Mabasa the opportunity to compete for domestic and continental honours in North Africa.
Known affectionately as “Sniper,” Mabasa had attracted interest from a number of clubs before deciding to continue his career in Morocco. He had previously been linked with Kaizer Chiefs and Egyptian club Pyramids FC.
Before completing the transfer, Mabasa said farewell to Orlando Pirates and expressed his gratitude to the club, his team-mates and staff. His departure brings an end to a period in which he became a regular contributor for the Buccaneers, while also gaining experience during several loan spells.
Mabasa began his professional career with Bloemfontein Celtic before joining Orlando Pirates in 2019. During his time at the club, he spent periods on loan at Sekhukhune United, Swallows FC and Stellenbosch FC, maintaining a consistent scoring record at each of his temporary destinations.
Across his Premier Soccer League career, Mabasa has scored 74 goals in 249 appearances. Those figures underline his standing as one of the country’s most reliable goalscorers and helped secure his move to the Moroccan champions.
Maghreb de Fes will be hoping the forward can reproduce that form as they attempt to add further silverware and prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign. For Mabasa, the transfer represents a fresh challenge and his first experience of football outside South Africa.
The striker’s move also marks a significant moment for both player and club. Mabasa becomes the first South African to wear the colours of Maghreb de Fes, while the Moroccan side gain an experienced forward with a proven record in the Premier Soccer League and a history of performing in important domestic matches.
