Tanzania edge Egypt on penalties to reach AFCON U-17 final

Tanzania reached the final of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON U-17) after edging Egypt 4-3 on penalties following a tense goalless draw in their semi-final clash on Thursday.

Neither side could find a breakthrough during regulation time despite several chances at both ends, forcing the contest to be decided from the penalty spot.

Tanzania held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their spot-kicks to seal a historic victory and book their place in the continental final for the first time.

Egypt, who had impressed throughout the tournament, fell short after missing two penalties as their hopes of lifting the title came to an end.

The East Africans will now face either hosts Morocco or defending champions Senegal in the final, with the second semi-final scheduled for later on Thursday night.

The tournament final is set to take place on 2 June, where Tanzania will aim to complete a remarkable campaign by lifting the continental crown.
