Teddy Sheringham believes Marcus Rashford should not be blamed for Manchester United’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 season, saying the forward’s attitude and effort have been right since returning to Old Trafford.
Rashford’s performances have fallen short of expectations, according to English media reports, but Sheringham says there is no need for Manchester United to panic over the England forward.
A year ago, it appeared highly unlikely that Rashford would still be playing for Manchester United in the 2026/27 season. His preferred move to Barcelona did not happen, however, and he eventually returned to Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old has yet to score or provide an assist for Manchester United since his return. The club have also won only one of their opening five Premier League matches, increasing scrutiny on both the team and Rashford.
But former Manchester United player Sheringham does not believe Rashford’s displays are the main concern.
“Marcus Rashford has been a bit unlucky this season. He is indeed putting in the effort. He is not Man United’s problem at the moment,” Sheringham said in an interview.
“From what I’ve seen, his attitude is right, and it should always be.”
Although Sheringham acknowledged Rashford’s professionalism and application, he said those qualities should be expected rather than celebrated.
“He’s a professional. We shouldn’t be sitting here praising him for having a good attitude,” he added. “A professional player having the right attitude shouldn’t be an issue in the first place.”
Rashford’s poorest performance since returning to Manchester United came in the 1-1 draw against Fulham.
He was not involved during the most recent international break after withdrawing from the England squad, alongside his club team-mate Mainoo.
Manchester United will attempt to end their poor run when they host Tottenham. Rashford has scored six goals against Spurs during his career, with the latest coming in 2024 in a 2-2 draw between the sides.
This time, Manchester United will be seeking more than a share of the points as they aim to return to winning ways.
