Santi Denia said he was proud of the Czech Republic’s performance despite their 3-1 defeat by Spain, a match in which a controversial disallowed goal denied his side the chance to make it 2-2.
The Czech Republic had appeared to score an equaliser before the decision was overturned. However, Denia declined to criticise the referee and instead praised the effort shown by his players.
“We are very proud of the work we produced,” Denia said at his post-match news conference. “The players gave everything, and that is the way we must continue.”
Asked about the disallowed goal, the Czech Republic manager said he did not want to become involved in a debate over the decision.
“I respect the referee. It is an extremely complicated job and I do not like talking about referees,” he said. “Pablo told me that a foul had been given before the goal. During the match, and with the tension, there were some protests. That is all.”
Denia also highlighted the progress being made by the Czech Republic and said the difficult experience against Spain would benefit the team in the future in the Nations League.
“We are very happy with the team’s work and performance,” he said. “Salama’s team is constantly developing, and commitment is the most important thing. This is the ideal time for us to grow as a team, and this difficult experience will help us in the Nations League in the future.”
The manager acknowledged that there was still room for improvement, including in his own work.
“We have to get better, and I am also part of that,” Denia added. “We have a lot of work to do.”
Denia revealed that the match had also been shaped by his longstanding relationship with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente. He said there had been little time for lengthy conversations before or during the game.
“There was not time for many things,” Denia said. “I know everyone in the federation, and I know how much he has grown.”
The two managers embraced after the final whistle, a moment Denia described as a reflection of their friendship.
“The hug with Luis was the embrace of a friendship that has lasted 12 years and included difficult times,” he said. “This is a period of harmony, and you should all enjoy it to the fullest.”
