Mohamed Salah has come under heavy criticism from several former Premier League players and pundits after comments he made following Liverpool FC’s recent defeat to Aston Villa FC triggered controversy in English football.
The Egyptian forward posted a message on his official social media accounts after Liverpool suffered a 4-2 loss earlier this week, a result that intensified pressure on the club during a crucial stage of the season.
In the statement, Salah expressed frustration over Liverpool’s performances and appeared to question the team’s current direction under coach Arne Slot.
“Our collapse and another defeat this season is incredibly painful. Our fans don’t deserve this,” Salah wrote.
He added: “I want Liverpool to return to being that fierce, attacking team that everyone fears. This is the football I know, and this is the identity that must be reclaimed and preserved forever. Everyone who joins us must adapt to that.”
The remarks quickly attracted attention across English football, with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher leading criticism of the player during analysis on Sky Sports.
Speaking before the Premier League match between Arsenal FC and Burnley FC, Carragher strongly condemned Salah’s comments and questioned the timing of the statement.
“Two years ago I said he was a selfish person, and now that description applies to him again. The team is going through a crucial week and has not yet secured qualification for the Champions League. Everyone should focus on the collective interest. It is Liverpool, not Salah’s club. What happened was inappropriate.”
Carragher, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool during his career, continued his criticism by suggesting he had expected controversy involving Salah before the end of the campaign.
“I’m not surprised by what Salah said. I told everyone he would do something new before the end of the season. I thought he would do it after he left the club, but he’s done it now!”
Former Arsenal FC captain Patrick Vieira also criticised the Liverpool forward, describing the situation as disappointing.
“I was very disappointed by what the player did. I think his behavior will not help him, nor will it help the club or even the manager. Liverpool does not deserve this. He should have left on a high note, so that the fans would remember what he did for this club.”
The reaction was not limited to Carragher and Vieira. Reports indicated that several English analysts opposed Salah’s remarks, including former Manchester United FC striker Wayne Rooney, who reportedly called for the Egyptian to be dropped for Liverpool’s final Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth.
Former defender Gary Neville also criticised Salah, comparing his actions to someone who “pulled the fuse of a bomb in the middle of the room and then left quickly.”
Liverpool now face mounting pressure ahead of their final league game of the season at Anfield against Bournemouth next Sunday.
The club currently sits fifth in the Premier League table and requires victory to guarantee qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The controversy surrounding Salah has added further tension to an already difficult period for Liverpool as the club attempts to secure a top-four finish while managing growing scrutiny over internal frustrations and the team’s future direction.
