Rodri was given the loudest welcome by Barcelona supporters on his first appearance before the club’s home crowd, while Frenkie de Jong endured a difficult presentation ceremony in which boos outweighed applause.
The midfielder, wearing the number 16 shirt, was introduced to the fans at Spotify Camp Nou shortly before Barcelona’s friendly against Al Ahly of Egypt in the Joan Gamper Trophy. His arrival prompted an immediate surge of excitement, offering an early indication of the expectations surrounding his move to the Catalan club.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Rodri walked on to the pitch alongside Dani Olmo. As soon as supporters recognised the new signing, chants and applause rang around the stadium.
Barcelona shirts bearing the names of Lamine Yamal and Pedri were visible throughout the crowd, but some fans had already bought shirts carrying Rodri’s name. That was another sign of the anticipation surrounding his arrival.
Rodri appeared visibly moved by the atmosphere inside Spotify Camp Nou. During the presentation, he repeatedly looked towards the stands and ultimately received the strongest reception of any Barcelona player.
The response suggested that Rodri is expected to contribute more than simply his qualities as a new signing. Barcelona have also identified him as a potential leader within a young and ambitious squad. His calm and assured manner during the presentation reflected those expectations.
While Rodri experienced a memorable introduction, de Jong had a markedly different evening.
Mundo Deportivo reported that the Netherlands midfielder was met by more boos than applause. The reaction appeared to be linked to his explanations regarding the injury he suffered during the World Cup, which is expected to keep him out of the team during the early part of the season.
De Jong has also temporarily lost the Barcelona captaincy, a development which appeared to intensify the supporters’ reaction when he stepped on to the pitch.
Hansi Flick was the first to address the crowd, making the occasion particularly emotional for the German manager. Although his press conferences are still conducted in English, Flick surprised supporters by using several phrases in Catalan.
He also referred to his father, who died last season, and said that what he remembered from that difficult day was the support and warmth he received from the Barcelona family.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much,” Flick told the fans. He also thanked Joan Laporta and Deco for their work in assembling the squad and promised that Barcelona would compete for every trophy.
He ended his message with a phrase that emphasised unity: “Together we are stronger.”
Several other players were warmly received, including Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal. Raphinha was also among the most prominent figures, speaking to the supporters as captain for the occasion.
The Brazil international sought to build further excitement ahead of the new campaign, insisting that everything begins again with the start of the season.
Raphinha opened his address by sending a message to team-mate Roony Bardghji, who has suffered a serious injury, before congratulating Barcelona’s players who won the World Cup.
He also addressed the club’s new arrivals, warning them about the responsibility that comes with wearing the Barcelona shirt.
“Wearing this badge is a very big responsibility,” he said.
Through his words and his presence, Raphinha helped carry the enthusiasm from the pitch into the stands. But on a night intended to mark the beginning of a new chapter for Barcelona, it was Rodri who emerged as the clearest symbol of the club’s hopes.
