Relebohile Mofokeng lands awards hat-trick and half‐million rand windfall at PSL ceremony

Relebohile Mofokeng completed a clean sweep of the Premier Soccer League’s major individual honours and is set to pocket an estimated R500,000 after a dominant showing at the 2025/26 PSL Awards.

The former Orlando Pirates winger, who has secured a move to Union SG in Belgium and a place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup 2026 squad, was named PSL Footballer of the Season on Monday night. He finished ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena and ex-Pirates team-mate Oswin Appollis in the vote for South African football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Mofokeng also took home the Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season award, again beating Appollis, with Kamogelo Sebelebele the other shortlisted contender.

The 20-year-old then completed a remarkable treble by being crowned Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season. He edged TS Galaxy’s Sihle Mahlambi and Golden Arrows prospect Isaac Cisse to that accolade, underlining his status as the outstanding emerging talent in the top flight.

Cash boost from awards treble

While the PSL has not officially confirmed the 2025/26 prize structure, figures from last season suggest Mofokeng’s night of success will be highly lucrative.

According to KickOff, the previous campaign’s Footballer of the Season award carried prize money of R250,000. The Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season was worth R200,000, with the Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season paying out R50,000.

If those amounts have been maintained for the latest edition, Mofokeng will have earned a combined R500,000 from the three awards.

His sweep of the major categories reflects the scale of his impact in what proved to be his final season in the PSL before moving to Europe.

Standout season for departing Pirates star

Mofokeng produced 10 goals and eight assists in 27 Betway Premiership appearances for Orlando Pirates last term, spearheading the club’s attacking threat throughout the campaign.

That form not only translated into domestic recognition at the PSL Awards, but also strengthened his international credentials, helping secure his inclusion in Bafana Bafana’s squad for FIFA World Cup 2026.

His performances have also earned him a transfer to Union SG in Belgium, offering the forward a first opportunity to test himself in European football after his breakthrough in the South African top flight.

Orlando Pirates dominate Premiership honours

Mofokeng’s individual success came on a night largely dominated by Orlando Pirates across the Betway Premiership categories.

Abdeslam Ouaddou was named Betway Premiership Coach of the Season, while Sipho Chaine collected Betway Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season. Lebone Seema took Betway Premiership Defender of the Season, with Oswin Appollis recognised as Betway Premiership Midfielder of the Season.

Orlando Pirates players also picked up several cup accolades. Tshepang Moremi was chosen as MTN8 Last Man Standing, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi won Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament.

Nedbank Cup and lower-division awards

Outside the Premiership, Darren Keet of Durban City secured Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, and TS Galaxy’s Seluleko Mahlambi was named Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament.

In the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Cape Town City enjoyed a strong showing. Emile Witbooi won Motsepe Foundation Championship Players’ Player of the Season, Gabriel Amato was awarded Motsepe Foundation Championship Young Player of the Season, and Mickey Van Der Hart took Motsepe Foundation Championship Goalkeeper of the Season.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Bennet Mokoena claimed the DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season award.

The match officials were also recognised, with Eugene Mdluli named PSL Referee of the Year and Nandipha Menze awarded PSL Assistant Referee of the Season.
