Real Madrid are refusing to meet Vinicius Junior’s demands for a substantial contract-renewal bonus, despite the risk that the Brazil forward could leave the club for nothing.
The dispute has created a difficult choice for the Spanish giants, who are determined not to establish a financial precedent that could encourage other leading players to seek similarly lucrative terms.
According to Spanish radio programme El Larguero on Cadena SER, Vinicius is asking for a renewal bonus comparable to the signing bonus Kylian Mbappe received when he joined Real Madrid. He also wants a larger share of his image rights.
Real Madrid have rejected those demands, with the club concerned that agreeing to them would threaten the financial structure of the squad by opening the door to further wage and bonus requests from its other stars.
Sports analyst Marcos Lopez warned that accepting Vinicius’ terms could have wider consequences for the club.
“I understand why Real Madrid refuse to give him a renewal bonus; because it seems to me a gross injustice to the player, to ask him to pay a bonus to renew his contract. If we accept this, Bellingham will come, then Valverde, then the others… and it will not end well,” he said on El Larguero.
Lopez pointed to Mbappe’s previous situation at Paris Saint-Germain as an example of the dangers of allowing elite players to set the terms of major financial agreements.
“Look at what happened in Paris with Mbappe; things usually do not end well when you open this door,” he added.
The timing of the disagreement is increasingly important. Vinicius will be able to negotiate freely with any club in the world from January, with five months remaining before that point, placing Real Madrid under pressure to reach an agreement.
The club must decide whether to give way to the player’s financial demands and risk creating a precedent, or maintain its position and potentially lose one of its leading attackers without receiving a transfer fee.
Spanish newspaper Diario AS reported that the relationship between Vinicius and Real Madrid began to deteriorate after Mbappe’s arrival. The France forward quickly became the team’s main star, while Vinicius’ role was reduced to a secondary position.
That change reportedly left the Brazilian dissatisfied and led him to seek treatment comparable to Mbappe’s within the club.
Aritz Abelondo, the presenter of El Larguero, argued that Vinicius was no longer in a position to dictate the terms of negotiations as he might have done previously.
“We are talking about Real Madrid’s future project, and Vinicius is not as he was two years ago. The club is offering him a huge contract, but he is no longer the player he was, and I think his level is declining,” he said.
Real Madrid appear determined to maintain their refusal to pay Vinicius a renewal bonus, even if that stance eventually leads to his departure.
The club’s position would send a clear message to the rest of the squad that it will not surrender to demands that could create a precedent and undermine its long-term financial stability.
