Orlando Pirates could receive a significant boost before their MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, with Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa in contention to return from injury.
The two players have been unavailable for about two months and have missed the club’s recent matches. Although both could be involved when Pirates meet Sundowns, their lack of match fitness is likely to count against them starting a game of such importance.
The final will be played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October 2026 and is the first meeting between the sides this season.
The match carries added importance in the Betway Premiership title race. Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the table by one point, while Orlando Pirates have a game in hand over their rivals. Victory in Saturday’s final could therefore give the winners a significant psychological advantage as the season develops.
Mbatha’s potential return would be particularly valuable to Orlando Pirates. The midfielder played a key role during an impressive run last season, when the Buccaneers remained unbeaten in matches he started.
He was also unavailable when Orlando Pirates lost 2-1 to Sundowns earlier this year.
While there is positive news regarding the injured players, Pirates remain concerned about the fitness of captain Nkosinathi Sibisi. The 31-year-old defender is currently with Bafana Bafana but has been unable to play because of a knock.
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will hope Sibisi recovers in time to return to club duty fully fit.
The MTN8 final represents another opportunity for the Buccaneers to extend their record in the competition. With R10 million at stake, Orlando Pirates will be aiming to make history by winning a fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
