Mokoena says he dreamt of Champions League final goal

Teboho Mokoena has revealed he dreamt about scoring in the CAF Champions League final after producing a decisive performance to help Mamelodi Sundowns secure continental glory.

The midfielder scored a crucial goal just before half-time as Sundowns earned a 1-1 draw against ASFAR at a packed Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium, a result that ensured the South African side lifted the trophy.

Mokoena’s display earned him the Man of the Match award following a final in which Sundowns held firm to complete a successful campaign and claim the African title.

After the match, the 29-year-old said the goal had felt almost destined after he imagined the moment earlier in the day.

“Today when I was sleeping, I saw myself scoring a goal like that,” he told Mazola Molefe on SABC Sport.

The midfielder also spoke about the emotions surrounding the occasion and the significance of the victory for those connected to the club.

“I’ve been saying to my family ‘I hope God is on our side tonight’ and he was.

“I’m very grateful, I’m very happy. I know how much it means for everyone back home. The stuff, everyone. Mom Zo in the kitchen, our supporters – a small group, our 57 people home.”

The result marked another historic achievement for Sundowns, who added a second CAF Champions League title to their record after previously winning the competition in 2016.

Mokoena reflected on what the triumph means for the identity of the club and its supporters, particularly with Sundowns now set to add another star above their badge to represent their second continental success.

“I’m very excited, I don’t know what to say next time we’re gonna wear this jersey, it’s going to have two stars, so I’m very happy.”

The midfielder’s goal proved one of the defining moments of the final and came at a critical stage of the match, giving Sundowns momentum before the interval in a difficult away atmosphere.

The final was played in front of a sold-out crowd, with ASFAR pushing to overturn the tie on home soil. However, Sundowns maintained composure throughout the contest and secured the result they needed to be crowned champions of Africa.

Beyond lifting the trophy, the victory has also guaranteed Sundowns qualification for several major international competitions.

As African champions, the club have booked a place at the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and will also compete in the 2026 CAF Super Cup and the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The latest success further strengthens Sundowns’ position as one of the continent’s leading clubs and caps a memorable campaign for the Pretoria side.

For Mokoena, the final will likely remain one of the standout moments of his career after his goal and overall performance helped guide Sundowns to one of the most significant achievements in African club football.
