Matthias Jaissle has said Newcastle United must focus on building a new project rather than making excuses for the major changes to the squad, as he made his first public appearance since becoming the club’s manager.
The German spoke to the media during Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, in comments reported by Sky Sports. He acknowledged that the team would need time and hard work to develop, while expressing confidence that the club’s hierarchy would support him during the transfer window.
Jaissle, who has only officially taken charge one day before addressing the media, was asked where Newcastle could finish the season after the changes made to the squad.
“Questioning where we can finish the season after all these changes? It is difficult to answer after only one day officially in the job,” he said.
The 37-year-old also accepted that Newcastle had lost several important players, but insisted those departures should provide motivation rather than become an explanation for any difficulties.
“We have lost a number of important players, but I see that as a positive challenge. We could look for excuses, but that is not our way,” Jaissle added.
His immediate priority will be to assess the players already at his disposal before deciding what changes are required. Jaissle said he wanted to understand the squad properly and give every member an opportunity to demonstrate their value.
“Give me some time to get to know the players. I want to know them well and give them the chance to prove themselves. After that, we will be able to assess things better,” he said.
The Newcastle manager also indicated that further recruitment is expected before the start of the season. He said the club had the financial and organisational resources to strengthen the squad, and that the sporting director was fully aware of what might be needed.
“We have the ability to move in the market, and our sporting director knows that very well. I am confident that we will see new faces at the beginning of the season,” Jaissle said.
Jaissle’s appointment follows his departure from Al Ahli a few days ago. He left the Saudi Arabian club after a highly successful spell in which he won the AFC Champions League Elite on two successive occasions, as well as the domestic Super Cup once.
The German coach now begins his work at Newcastle with an emphasis on patience, evaluation and competition within the squad, while the club considers further additions during the transfer window.
