The Liberia football governing body has confirmed that a group of promising young players will travel to the United Kingdom for an international development tour aimed at boosting their skills and exposure.
The Liberia Football Association (LFA) said the selected squad, drawn from the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) and the national Under-20 team, is scheduled to depart on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s football development pathway.
According to the association, the players and officials included in the first travelling group have already completed their visa application process at the British High Commission in Sierra Leone. Additional members of the delegation are expected to join the team in the UK once their travel documents are approved.
While in Britain, the squad will take part in a series of matches against youth teams and academies. The LFA says these fixtures are intended to provide competitive experience and technical development opportunities for the players.
In a statement, the association expressed appreciation for the assistance received during the visa process, noting: “The LFA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the U.K. Embassy in Liberia for their continued support and professional guidance throughout this administrative process.” It added that it remains committed to creating opportunities for young Liberian footballers to gain international exposure.
However, the tour comes after a change of plans involving a separate competition in the United States. The LFA confirmed that the team will no longer participate in the Dallas Cup, a youth tournament that had been anticipated by supporters, particularly within the Liberian community in the US.
The association attributed the withdrawal to logistical challenges linked to visa applications. Managing travel documentation for both the United States and the United Kingdom at the same time proved difficult, preventing completion of the US visa process before the deadline.
The LFA acknowledged the disappointment caused by the cancellation and apologised to organisers and supporters. “We deeply value our relationship with the Dallas Cup organizers and we look forward to future opportunities,” the statement said.
Despite the setback, the association indicated that plans are already underway for a separate visit to the United States later in the year. A tour involving the senior men’s national team is being prepared for July 2026, suggesting continued efforts to maintain international engagement.
The travelling squad includes players based both in Liberia and abroad, reflecting a mix of domestic and diaspora talent. Several participants are attached to academies under the TDS programme, while others represent clubs in the United States and Australia.
Team officials accompanying the players include technical staff, coaching personnel, and support members responsible for logistics, medical care, and media coordination.
The LFA says the tour represents a significant step in its broader strategy to nurture young players and provide them with opportunities to compete at higher levels, as Liberia seeks to strengthen its presence in international football.
