Jurgen Klopp has warned Joshua Kimmich that his place in Germany’s team is not guaranteed as competition for midfield positions increases.
Klopp confirmed that Alexander Pavlovic and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig will start against Greece on Sunday in Germany’s fourth UEFA Nations League match.
Speaking at a news conference, reported by Bulinews, Klopp joked about Pavlovic’s comments before the media session.
“I told Pavlovic immediately before the news conference that he could not speak in a way that would see him left out of the team,” he said.
Klopp also indicated that Urbig is likely to remain in goal, despite speculation that Finn Dahmen of Augsburg could make his Germany debut.
“At the moment, it looks as though we will not make a change in goal tomorrow, but who knows what we will do,” Klopp said.
“The other goalkeepers who have been with us play regularly for their clubs. Urbig does not play regularly for Bayern Munich, which is why he will get the chance to play this match.”
He added: “That is how we planned it. But everyone has made a great impression, and there will be no problems in this position.”
The decision means Urbig is expected to keep his place between the posts for the meeting with Greece, rather than give Dahmen his first senior international appearance.
Klopp was also asked about the debate over whether Kimmich should be regarded as an indispensable member of the Germany side.
“He played a good match against Serbia,” Klopp said. “But why should one player always play in the future?”
He added that selection depended on a player’s condition as well as reputation.
“You also have to be in good shape to play. You would not play for your club if you were not at your best either,” he said. “We need different types of players.”
Klopp said Germany required a variety of qualities in midfield, including leadership and the ability to cover large areas of the pitch.
“We need leaders and players who are capable of covering large spaces on the field. We need all types of players,” he said.
“Fortunately, we have more than three good players in midfield.”
