Kaizer Chiefs are considering the departure of Given Msimango as part of a proposed deal to sign Stellenbosch FC winger Langelihle Phili, while midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo could be offered a new contract.
Msimango, 29, is reportedly one of two players Chiefs have put forward, alongside a cash payment, in an attempt to secure the services of highly rated 21-year-old Phili. The winger is expected to officially join Amakhosi, with Msimango potentially moving in the opposite direction.
“SABC Sport has established that defender Given Msimango is one of two players Kaizer Chiefs have offered, together with a cash payment, to Stellenbosch FC in an effort to secure the signing of highly rated winger Langelihle Phili,” reads part of a report by SABC Sport.
The central defender arrived at Chiefs from TS Galaxy in 2023 and initially established himself as an important member of the team. His role has since diminished, however, with Inacio Miguel and the now-departed Aden McCarthy moving ahead of him in the defensive pecking order.
A series of injuries have also disrupted Msimango’s progress. His possible departure would form part of a significant period of movement at Chiefs, who have been reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Ngcobo has also endured injury problems, but his situation could develop more positively. The midfielder may earn a new contract despite having struggled to maintain regular involvement because of his fitness record.
Chiefs add experience to squad
Chiefs have already strengthened in several areas. Khanyisa Mayo has joined permanently from CR Belouizdad for a reported fee of close to R9.8 million, following his previous loan spell.
Adolf Mtsangawa, a 27-year-old defensive midfielder, has arrived from Azam FC for an undisclosed fee and becomes the first Tanzanian player to sign for Amakhosi.
Mtsangawa offers experience gained during six seasons in Scandinavia, where he played in Iceland, Norway and Finland. He returned to Tanzania in 2024 and helped Azam FC finish third in the league last season. He is also the vice-captain of his country.
Defender Thabo Moloisane joins with established PSL experience after becoming a regular for an impressive Stellenbosch side. The 28-year-old can play at centre-back or fill in at right-back.
Goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner has moved from Sekhukhune United to strengthen Chiefs’ options in goal. The 1.87m stopper has represented Bafana.
Phili would add pace and direct running from wide positions. The 21-year-old is expected to complete his move from Stellenbosch once the details of the proposed deal involving Msimango are resolved.
The signing of Mtsangawa has already prompted criticism from some Chiefs supporters on Facebook, with several questioning whether he has the quality required by the club.
Kabelo Nkgwesa was given playing time in Chiefs’ opening friendly of their tour, a 1-1 draw against Scottish giants Rangers.
Elsewhere, Betway Premiership newcomers Kruger United have been active in the transfer market and have recruited a number of experienced PSL players, including Fiacre Ntwari.
Kruger United will face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 1 August, with kick-off scheduled for 20:15.
