Kaizer Chiefs winger Mfundo Vilakazi could be handed a more regular starting role while Mdu Shabalala recovers from injury, as midfielder Thabo Cele’s future at the club becomes increasingly uncertain.
The latest rumours surrounding the club concern several players whose positions in the team remain unclear, as well as a possible change in responsibilities for Vilakazi.
One player whose future has now been settled is Langelihle Phili. The 21-year-old winger has signed his Kaizer Chiefs contract after joining from Stellies, ending weeks of speculation over his next move.
Phili enjoyed an effective campaign last season, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 21 league appearances. His arrival gives Kaizer Chiefs another attacking option, although it remains to be seen whether he will move straight into the starting XI.
Vilakazi may have a clearer opportunity to establish himself in the side because Shabalala is currently sidelined with an injury. The 22-year-old Shabalala suffered a broken arm, but could return earlier than initially expected.
The competition for places in attack and midfield was highlighted by Kaizer Chiefs’ opening match of the new season against Kruger United. Coach Fernando Da Cruz selected some unexpected names from the start, including Ethan Chislett in the number 10 position and Luke Baartman in a wide attacking role.
Kaizer Chiefs won the match 3-1, with Vilakazi contributing an assist. That performance means he is expected to retain his place when the club face Golden Arrows in the MTN8.
Kaizer Chiefs will host Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 9 August, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
While Vilakazi appears set to benefit from Shabalala’s absence, Cele’s position looks less secure. The 29-year-old midfielder could leave the club, with Da Cruz indicating that he does not favour the player.
There are also further changes that could be made to the team in the coming matches. Thabo Moloisane, who arrived from Stellies, is expected to work his way into the starting side.
Wandile Duba may also have done enough to earn a starting place against Golden Arrows after scoring twice as a substitute. His impact from the bench has strengthened his case for inclusion in the next MTN8 fixture.
A possible Kaizer Chiefs line-up for the match is:
Petersen; Monyane, Moloisane, Miguel, Frosler; Maboe, Ndlovu; Duba, Vilakazi, Phili; Silva.
The club’s latest developments leave several questions to be answered, including whether Phili will be introduced immediately, whether Duba will be rewarded for his goalscoring cameo and how long Shabalala will be unavailable.
For Vilakazi, however, Shabalala’s injury has created an opportunity to claim a sustained place in the starting XI. His assist in the victory over Kruger United has given him an encouraging platform before the MTN8 meeting with Golden Arrows.
