Kaizer Chiefs return to the MTN8 after a two-year absence when they host Golden Arrows in a quarter-final at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
The match kicks off at 18:00 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL (Channel 202), with Chiefs aiming to take another step towards ending a lengthy wait for the competition’s trophy.
Fernando da Cruz’s side missed out on the MTN8 last season and will be determined to make their return count. Chiefs last won the tournament in 2014, when Stuart Baxter’s team defeated Orlando Pirates in the final.
That success remains the club’s most recent MTN8 triumph. In the 12 years since, Kaizer Chiefs have won only one major domestic cup, underlining the scale of their prolonged trophy drought.
Their promising opening to the Betway Premiership season has nevertheless created renewed optimism around the club. Chiefs are beginning to believe they can mount a serious challenge for silverware this campaign, although their meeting with Golden Arrows will provide an important early test.
A win at FNB Stadium would send Amakhosi into the MTN8 semi-finals. Failure to progress, however, would intensify the scrutiny on Da Cruz and prompt further questions about whether Chiefs are capable of competing consistently for major honours.
The hosts will already know the results of the other MTN8 quarter-finals involving domestic rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns by the time they take to the field. Any setback for either of those title contenders could offer additional encouragement to Chiefs as they seek to take advantage of the opportunity in front of them.
Kaizer Chiefs go into the tie as favourites, but their record in the competition over the past decade means Golden Arrows will not be regarded as straightforward opponents. An early exit for the Glamour Boys would not represent a major surprise given their recent struggles to turn expectation into cup success.
The fixture therefore carries significance beyond a place in the last four. Chiefs are seeking progress in the MTN8, but also hope to demonstrate that their improved start to the league campaign can translate into a sustained challenge for trophies.
For Da Cruz, Sunday’s contest offers the chance to ease pressure and establish momentum in a competition the club has not won since 2014. For Golden Arrows, the match presents an opportunity to upset the favourites and reach the semi-finals at the expense of one of South Africa’s most prominent clubs.
