Viktor Gyokeres has become the first player to score in six consecutive Nations League matches after continuing his Sweden revival with a goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Arsenal striker had also scored against Romania and Poland during the current international break, making it three goals in three games. His latest strike extended a run which began in the previous edition of the competition in 2024.
Gyokeres scored against Estonia in October 2024, followed by one against Slovakia and four against Azerbaijan a month later. His goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina took his total to six successive Nations League appearances with a goal.
No player had previously managed that feat. The former record of five consecutive matches was shared by Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko, who achieved it for Slovenia across 2022 and 2024, and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic with Serbia.
Gyokeres also had a second goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina ruled out by VAR, to his frustration.
He will have an opportunity to make the record seven consecutive Nations League games when Sweden complete their international break against Romania on Monday.
International form contrasts with Arsenal start
The 2025-26 season had offered Gyokeres little opportunity to find his rhythm at Arsenal before he joined up with Sweden. He had not started a Premier League match, while manager Mikel Arteta had preferred Kai Havertz as his central striker.
Gyokeres had also failed to score in his limited substitute appearances for the club. His 21 goals in all competitions last season represented a respectable return, but it was well below the 54 he scored in his final campaign with Sporting CP.
The injury suffered by Sweden team-mate Alexander Isak created more responsibility for Gyokeres during the international break, and he has taken that opportunity with three goals in as many matches.
Havertz has since picked up a knock while on duty with Germany, raising the possibility that Gyokeres could return to Arsenal with an immediate chance to lead the attack.
However, his best scoring run for Arsenal so far is only two consecutive matches. He therefore has work to do if he is to reproduce for his club the consistency he has shown with Sweden.
The leading scorers for consecutive Nations League appearances are:
– Viktor Gyokeres (Sweden) – 6
– Aleksandar Mitrovic (Serbia) – 5
– Benjamin Sesko (Slovenia) – 5
– Joao Felix (Portugal) – 4
– Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Georgia) – 4
– Razvan Marin (Romania) – 4
– Georges Mikautadze (Georgia) – 4
