Gyan takes new roles with Ghana football at colourful ceremony

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has been officially unveiled as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and Colts football by the Ghana Football Association during a ceremony in Accra.

The event, held on Wednesday at the Pelican Hotel, brought together several prominent figures from Ghanaian football and entertainment, as the country’s all-time leading scorer was handed a new role aimed at supporting the national teams ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Among those present were GFA president Kurt Okraku, members of the association’s executive council, former Black Stars players, coaches, corporate stakeholders and members of the media.

Representing Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Chief Director Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah congratulated Gyan on his appointment and commended his contribution to football in the country over the years.

Several former teammates and football personalities attended the occasion in support of the former striker, including Stephen Appiah, Anthony Baffoe, Prince Tagoe, Jerry Akaminko and Gyan’s brother Baffour Gyan.

Musicians also joined the celebrations, with Ghanaian music duo DopeNation and highlife singer Kwabena Kwabena among the guests at the colourful gathering.

During his speech, Gyan thanked the Ghana Football Association, his family, former coaches, teammates and supporters for their support throughout his playing career.

The former Black Stars captain also presented specially branded Black Stars jerseys to selected dignitaries and personalities during the ceremony as a sign of appreciation.

In his address, Okraku praised Gyan’s impact on Ghana football, describing him as a figure whose commitment, patriotism and achievements continue to motivate younger generations of players and supporters.

The ambassadorial appointment is expected to place Gyan at the forefront of promotional and fan engagement activities connected to Ghana’s national teams.

The role will also involve initiatives designed to strengthen public support for the various national sides as preparations continue towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Gyan remains one of the most recognisable figures in Ghanaian football history, having enjoyed a lengthy international career with the Black Stars and becoming the country’s leading scorer.

The ceremony in Accra reflected his continued influence within Ghana football, with administrators, former players, entertainers and stakeholders gathering to celebrate his achievements and support his latest position within the sport.

The Ghana Football Association hopes the appointment will help deepen the connection between supporters and the national teams while also inspiring young footballers across the country.

With Ghana continuing preparations for future international competitions, Gyan’s new ambassadorial role is expected to see him become a central figure in campaigns aimed at promoting unity and enthusiasm around the Black Stars and Colts football.
