Grace Sery scores twice as Cote d’Ivoire take 2-0 lead over South Africa

Cote d’Ivoire took a commanding 2-0 lead against South Africa at half-time in their decisive second-day match at Medina Stadium, with Grace Sery scoring both goals. The result puts the Ivorian side in a strong position to secure qualification, while South Africa face the prospect of elimination unless they can overturn the deficit after the break.

The Elephants imposed their rhythm during the opening 45 minutes and punished South Africa with clinical finishing. Under the direction of Congolese referee Rachel Zihindula Nzigire, Cote d’Ivoire produced the more effective performance in a match carrying major consequences for both teams.

Sery opened the scoring after 18 minutes. The Ivorian forward finished off an excellent delivery from Ouedraogo, rewarding her side’s dominance and giving Cote d’Ivoire the lead they had been pressing for.

South Africa struggled to contain the Ivorian attack, and Sery struck again in the 36th minute. Once more, Ouedraogo provided the assist, allowing her to complete a decisive double and give her team a two-goal advantage before the interval.

The second goal also made it Ouedraogo’s second assist of the match. Her connection with Sery proved central to Cote d’Ivoire’s first-half success, with the pair repeatedly finding space and combining effectively in the final third.

Cote d’Ivoire went into the dressing room with a 2-0 lead after a first half in which they were disciplined in their approach and ruthless in front of goal. Their tactical solidity prevented South Africa from making the most of the situation, while Sery’s finishing created the clear difference between the teams.

For the Banyana Banyana, the position is now extremely difficult. South Africa came into the match needing a victory to keep their hopes in the competition alive, and the two-goal deficit leaves them with a substantial task in the second half.

Their coach must now find a response in the dressing room and devise a way to recover from the setback. Cote d’Ivoire, meanwhile, can approach the remainder of the match with the advantage of a two-goal cushion and the confidence created by Sery’s outstanding first-half display.

With qualification within reach for the Elephants and South Africa fighting to avoid saying goodbye to the tournament, the final 45 minutes will determine whether Cote d’Ivoire can protect their lead or whether the Bafana Bafana can produce a comeback.
