Ghana’s World Cup opponent England hand Bellingham 10 kit

England have announced their squad numbers for this summer’s World Cup, with several allocations offering clues about head coach Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the tournament.

Among the most notable decisions is the awarding of the prestigious No 10 shirt to Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder receives the iconic number despite recent questions surrounding his role in Tuchel’s long-term plans.

The squad numbering announcement has also provided insight into how England could line up when the competition begins, with a number of players appearing to have strengthened their positions within the team.

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly has been handed the No 3 shirt, a move that appears to underline his status as England’s preferred option at left-back heading into the tournament.

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn, who is also capable of operating on the left side of defence, will wear the No 15 shirt.

Another player whose standing within the squad appears to have grown is Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. After emerging as an important figure under Tuchel, Anderson has been allocated the No 8 shirt, a number often associated with influential midfielders.

The assignment may be viewed as further evidence of the midfielder’s increasing importance to England’s plans as they prepare for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Brentford’s Jordan Henderson has been given the No 14 shirt. The experienced midfielder previously wore the No 8 jersey but will now take a number that he also used during a successful period of his club career at Liverpool.

In defence, the numbering choices could also point towards England’s preferred central partnership. Manchester City defender John Stones has been assigned the No 5 shirt, while Marc Guehi will wear No 6.

The decision may suggest that the pair are regarded as Tuchel’s first-choice centre-back combination ahead of the tournament.

Further forward, Marcus Rashford has been handed the No 11 shirt. The attacker will wear the number after spending the season with Barcelona and is expected to be among England’s attacking options during the competition.

Anthony Gordon, who has recently completed a move to Barcelona, has been allocated the No 18 shirt.

While squad numbers do not always determine a player’s role, they often provide an indication of how a coach views members of his squad. England’s latest allocations appear to offer several hints about Tuchel’s preferred structure and key personnel as preparations continue for the World Cup.

The decision to hand Bellingham the No 10 shirt is likely to attract particular attention given both the significance of the number and the scrutiny surrounding his place within the national team setup in recent months.

With the tournament drawing closer, England supporters will now look ahead to seeing how the squad selections translate onto the pitch as Tuchel seeks to guide his team through the competition.

The numbering announcement marks another step in England’s World Cup preparations, with several players receiving shirts that may reflect their growing importance within the squad.
