FC Porto sign Senegalese prospect Mame Alassane Niang on five-year deal

FC Porto have secured the signing of highly rated Senegalese forward Mame Alassane Niang on a long-term contract, in a move seen as a strategic investment in the club’s attacking future.

The 20-year-old joins the Portuguese giants from Norwegian side HamKam and has signed a five-year deal that will keep him at the Estadio do Dragao until 2030.

Porto announced the transfer on Tuesday, 21 July, confirming that Niang will begin his career at the club with the reserve team as he adapts to his new surroundings and continues his development in European football.

The 31-time Portuguese champions are understood to have paid an initial €1.6m for the forward, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the final fee up by a further €725,000. Niang has been allocated the number 46 shirt.

From Senegal’s Diambars academy to Portugal’s elite

Niang’s move to Porto marks the latest step in a journey that began more than a decade ago at one of Senegal’s most respected academies.

The striker spent just over ten years at Diambars, an institution renowned for producing technically gifted players, before making the switch to Norway two years ago for an undisclosed fee.

He first joined HamKam on loan during the 2025–26 season. After a promising spell, the Norwegian club exercised their purchase option to secure him on a permanent basis.

Across his time in Norway, Niang featured for both Lyn and HamKam, recording 15 goals and one assist in 52 competitive appearances in all competitions.

His performances drew attention from elsewhere in Europe, with Turkish Super Lig side Kasımpasa previously linked with a move for the forward before Porto won the race for his signature.

Porto’s long-term plan for Niang

Although Niang will initially be integrated into Porto’s reserve ranks, the move is being viewed internally as part of a broader long-term strategy.

New first-team manager Francesco Farioli is expected to keep a close eye on the youngster’s progress as he settles into Portuguese football and adapts to Porto’s style of play.

Farioli, who has a reputation for trust in youth and structured player development, is likely to use the reserves as a pathway for Niang to eventually step into the senior squad.

The club will hope that regular game time at this level will accelerate his adaptation and allow him to build on the potential he showed in Norway and at Diambars.

Rising African talent in European spotlight

Niang’s transfer continues a growing trend of top European sides investing in young African talent at an early stage of their careers, with Porto long recognised for identifying and developing emerging players before selling them at a premium.

For Niang, the move represents a significant platform: a chance to compete for a place at a club with a strong record in domestic competition and regular participation in European tournaments.

If he can successfully translate his promise in Norway to the Portuguese game, Niang could become the latest in a line of forwards to use Porto as a springboard to the highest level of European football.
