Christophe Dugarry has criticised the role allegedly played by Malick Fofana’s family and representatives in his decision to leave Olympique Lyonnais for Sunderland.
The former France forward said he was disgusted by revelations surrounding the transfer, which were discussed on the RMC programme Rothen s’enflamme. Dugarry questioned whether the Belgium international’s personal wishes had been given sufficient priority when choosing his next club.
Fofana had also been offered the chance to join Crystal Palace, where he would have worked again with his former Olympique Lyonnais manager Pierre Sage. However, he ultimately opted for Sunderland.
According to the claims discussed on the programme, the decision was influenced by agent commissions and payments made to people close to the player. Fofana’s uncle was allegedly paid €500,000 as part of the deal.
Dugarry placed responsibility for what he described as unacceptable behaviour on the player’s family.
“The outrageous behavior clearly comes from the family. It’s disgraceful and unimaginable. Your first conversation with a player should be: Where do you want to go? The player’s wishes are paramount.”
The 1998 World Cup winner suggested that Fofana’s introverted personality may have made it more difficult for him to challenge the views of those around him or insist on his own preference.
Jerome Rothen, who presents the programme, also pointed out that the player remains the person who signs and confirms the contract. At the same time, he criticised the extent to which money can shape important career decisions in modern football.
Dugarry broadened his comments into a condemnation of the wider financial environment in the sport. He compared the situation to recent controversies involving FIFA president Gianni Infantino and questioned how families could be expected to resist lucrative offers when football itself is increasingly driven by financial power.
“When Infantino is willing to sell football to the highest bidder, how can you expect family members not to reach out to a club willing to pay €500,000?”
He added: “Today’s football, in some respects, is truly sickening, although I wouldn’t say this situation has never existed before.”
Fofana’s move from Olympique Lyonnais to Sunderland has therefore prompted debate not only about the player’s destination, but also about the influence of relatives, agents and financial incentives in transfers involving young players.
Dugarry did not suggest that the circumstances were entirely new to football. However, his comments reflected his belief that the scale of financial involvement in the modern game has made such disputes increasingly troubling.
The discussion also underlined the tension between a young player’s sporting ambitions and the competing interests of people involved in negotiating his career. In Fofana’s case, Crystal Palace would have provided the opportunity to reunite with Pierre Sage, while Sunderland became his eventual destination.
