Chelsea’s summer transfer window has been judged a success, with the club strengthening its squad while generating more than £300m in player sales for the second consecutive summer.
The assessment, reported by The Athletic, is that Chelsea’s overall squad has improved despite the departure of more than 20 players. The club also believes it has removed much of the group associated with former manager Enzo Maresca, although some players earmarked for permanent exits have left only on loan.
Cucurella and Enzo had previously held important roles in the team, but Chelsea were prepared to move on from a number of players linked closely with Maresca’s time in charge. Enzo made it clear he wanted to leave and joined Manchester City for £125m, equalling the Premier League transfer record.
Only three players initially expected to depart remain at the club. Defender Anselmino, who had originally been planned for a loan move, has instead been added to the first-team squad.
Chelsea’s recruitment has also addressed several areas of concern. The arrival of Emiliano Martinez is regarded as an improvement on Robert Sanchez in goal, while he can also help develop long-term prospect Mykhaylo Pends.
Lacroix made an immediate impact after joining and quickly established himself at centre-back. Chelsea also signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British-record transfer fee.
Although the partnership is still in its early stages, Rogers’ understanding with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro has already given Chelsea one of the strongest attacking combinations in the league.
The club had often been criticised for lacking leadership and experience in major matches. Those concerns have been eased by the additions of Emiliano Martinez, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.
Emmanuel Emegha and Welbeck give Chelsea alternative options and cover for Joao Pedro, although the Brazilian forward remains an important part of the team’s tactical structure.
Midfield remains the main area of uncertainty. Chelsea’s depth in that position is still considered questionable, particularly after a move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara collapsed and interest in Roma’s Manu Kone failed to result in a deal.
Spending and sales
Chelsea remain the Premier League’s leading club for player-sale income. The club invested more than £300m in new signings this summer, while revenue from transfers and loans was significantly higher.
Internal sources at Chelsea told The Athletic that spending on new players was about £328m. Income from player sales and loan arrangements was estimated at approximately £519m, although The Athletic said it had been unable to independently verify those figures.
The club did not sell any player it wanted to retain, apart from a small number of young players who were sent out on loan. However, the failure to complete permanent transfers for every player identified for departure means Chelsea may have to revisit some of those situations next summer.

January priorities
Further midfield recruitment is expected to be Chelsea’s main priority when the January transfer window opens.
The club’s need for reinforcements is increased by the injury problems that have affected Lavia and Reece James in recent years. Henderson, meanwhile, is 36 and approaching the end of his career.
Chelsea’s plans are likely to depend on results during the next four months and whether further injuries affect key positions.
The club believes it retains funds for future investment. Its financial statements show it has made considerable profits, leaving money available for recruitment in forthcoming transfer windows.
