Cameroon youth international Oscar Etoundi is reportedly on the verge of joining French club Montpellier as the Ligue 1 side continues its efforts to strengthen its youth development structure with promising African talent.
The 17-year-old defender, who currently plays for the Douala Football Academy, is expected to make the move to France in September as he takes an important step in his football career.
According to reports, Montpellier are preparing to integrate Etoundi into their development system with the long-term objective of offering him a professional contract once he reaches the required age to sign one.
While discussions have progressed positively, the transfer has not yet been finalised. Administrative procedures remain outstanding, meaning all parties are continuing to work towards completing the move in the coming months.
Etoundi has emerged as one of Cameroon’s most highly regarded young prospects following a series of impressive performances at youth level. The defender represented Cameroon at the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, where he showcased the qualities that have attracted interest from European clubs.
Known for his pace, attacking instincts and ability to deliver accurate crosses from wide positions, Etoundi is regarded as a modern full-back capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch.
His potential arrival would further strengthen the relationship between Montpellier and the Douala Football Academy, an institution founded by former Cameroon international Henri Bedimo. The ex-defender enjoyed a successful spell at Montpellier and was part of the club’s historic Ligue 1 title-winning squad in 2012.
The partnership has created a pathway for talented young Cameroonian players to pursue opportunities in European football, with Montpellier continuing to monitor prospects emerging from the academy.
However, previous experiences have highlighted the importance of completing all administrative requirements before celebrating a move. Similar procedures reportedly delayed the arrival of another young Cameroonian prospect, Glenn Ngosso, in the past.
Etoundi is also not expected to be the only player heading to France, with reports suggesting that two additional talents from the Douala Football Academy could join Montpellier’s youth setup in the near future.
Should the transfer be completed, Etoundi would join a growing list of Cameroonian players who have passed through Montpellier’s ranks, including Frédéric Miyenga, Claude Eboumbou Dipoko, Glenn Ngosso, Wilfried Ndollo Bille, Yvan Djemba Mbappé, Bahel Moussongo, Claude Epée Ngando and goalkeeper Kevin Kamdem, who recently signed a professional contract with the French club.
For the young defender, the move would represent a significant milestone and an opportunity to continue his development in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments.
