Bubista will leave his role as Cape Verde head coach after agreeing to become the new manager of RS Berkane in Morocco, following the national team’s remarkable campaign at the 2026 World Cup.
The 56-year-old has signed a contract with the Moroccan club until 2028. RS Berkane confirmed his appointment in a video published on its social media channels, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his next move.
Bubista succeeds Mouine Chaabani, who left the club a few days ago to take charge of the Tunisia national team.
The appointment comes after Bubista led Cape Verde to the most significant achievement in the country’s football history. Under his management, the Blue Sharks reached the World Cup for the first time in 2026 and progressed to the last 32.
Cape Verde were eventually eliminated by Argentina, losing 3-2 after extra time. Argentina were the reigning world champions and went on to reach the final, with Bubista’s side being knocked out with considerable credit after pushing one of the tournament’s strongest teams all the way.
Bubista, who was born in Povoacao Velha, had been linked with combining his new club responsibilities with his position as Cape Verde coach. According to L’Equipe, negotiations with RS Berkane took longer than expected because that possibility was being considered.
However, the coach is now expected to leave the national team in the near future, ending a six-year spell in charge of the Blue Sharks, Reds and Whites.
Bubista sets out RS Berkane targets
His immediate task at RS Berkane will be to help the club reclaim the Moroccan championship. The Orange secured the title in historic fashion last year, but were displaced from the top of the domestic standings this season by MAS Fes.
RS Berkane finished as Moroccan runners-up and will also be looking to make further progress in the CAF Champions League. The club reached the semi-finals of the competition in its first campaign but missed out on a place in the final after losing to AS FAR Rabat 2-0 in the first leg and 1-0 in the return fixture.
Bubista therefore arrives with responsibility on two fronts: restoring RS Berkane to the summit of Moroccan football and improving its standing in Africa’s leading club competition.
His move also marks a significant change for a coach whose reputation has been strengthened considerably by Cape Verde’s World Cup journey. After six years guiding the national side, Bubista is set to begin a new chapter with a club that expects to challenge domestically and compete at the highest level in the CAF Champions League.
