Barcelona chose not to sign a centre-back last summer, a decision that has taken on added significance as Alessandro Bastoni continues to impress for both Italy and Inter Milan.
Bastoni was one of the most prominent names in the transfer market, with uncertainty over his future making him a regular subject of discussion. He was linked with Barcelona for several weeks, particularly when it appeared the Catalan club intended to strengthen its defence.
However, Barcelona opted to prioritise other positions and ultimately did not bring in a centre-back. Bastoni was among the players most admired by the club, both for his ability and for his suitability to the footballing ideas of German manager Hansi Flick.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, the Italy international was viewed as a “missed opportunity”.
Real Madrid also later considered a move for Bastoni, although its interest did not develop into a formal offer. The defender therefore remained at Inter Milan, where he continues to play a central role in the Nerazzurri’s plans.
Inter’s stance was a major factor in preventing a potential transfer. The Italian club was not prepared to negotiate his departure unless it received a fee approaching 80m euros, effectively closing the door on a deal.
Bastoni’s performances at the start of this season have since underlined his reputation as a top-level defender. He has again become one of Inter Milan’s defensive pillars, leading the back line while also remaining an important part of the team’s build-up play.
That ability to contribute in possession has long been one of his main strengths. More recently, however, he has added another dimension to his game by finding the net more regularly.
During the current international break, Bastoni scored in both matches he played for Italy. He was on target in the 4-1 victory over Turkey before scoring against France on Friday to give the Azzurri a valuable equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
Goals have not traditionally been a defining feature of Bastoni’s career. Last season, he scored only twice in 40 appearances for Inter Milan.
At the beginning of the current campaign, though, he has found the net with greater ease, particularly while representing Italy. His recent displays have further highlighted why he attracted interest from Barcelona and why his decision to remain at Inter Milan has proved beneficial for his current club and country.
