Barcelona remain interested in Twente’s 18-year-old centre-back Mees Hilgers after making contact over a possible transfer in August, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The move could not be completed at that time, while Twente decided to keep the defender and develop him into one of the club’s leading players. Barcelona have continued to follow his progress and are expected to maintain their interest.
Romano discussed Hilgers during the latest episode of his podcast, saying: “Let’s continue talking about Barcelona. For the upcoming period, there’s definitely a name worth watching. Remember this name, because we’re talking about young talents now: Mees Hilgers. He is an 18-year-old defender who plays for Dutch club Twente.
“Twente is also aware of the situation, as they already knew in the summer transfer window that Barcelona was interested in him. At the time, Twente refused to let Hilgers leave. They wanted him to stay and become a star player for the team.
“At the centre-back position, Hilgers is considered one of the best young talents in Europe. So, Barcelona is keeping an eye on him and has been following his progress. Barcelona made contact in August to sign him. At the time, it wasn’t possible to complete the deal, but Barcelona will continue to monitor this young player. Their interest in him is genuine.”
The Spanish club are not alone in tracking the Netherlands Under-? [No source says] must not add. Other clubs have sent scouts to watch Hilgers in recent months, and that attention is expected to continue.
“In recent months, other clubs have also specifically sent scouts to watch Hilgers play. This will certainly continue in the upcoming period. So, I am sure that Hilgers’ situation is worth continuous attention. In this matter, there has already been genuine interest and communication,” Romano added.
Twente’s decision to retain Hilgers means Barcelona were unable to secure an agreement in August, but the defender remains on their list of players under consideration. The interest described by Romano includes both direct contact and continued monitoring, while scouting activity from other teams has also increased.
