Arsenal are close to completing one of the major deals of the summer transfer window after reaching an agreement with Newcastle United to sign their captain, Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
The agreement was confirmed by respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who announced the move on his official account on X using his trademark phrase, “Here We Go”. Romano said Arsenal had concluded lengthy negotiations with Newcastle after already agreeing personal terms with the 28-year-old in July.
The transfer is worth £75m and would make Guimaraes the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of the new season.
Arsenal’s interest moved into a decisive phase in recent days, with discussions progressing from contact through intermediaries to formal negotiations between the two clubs. The Gunners have been keen to strengthen their midfield with one of the Premier League’s leading players.
Newcastle had previously rejected an opening Arsenal offer of £70m, instead demanding a higher fee. Further negotiations eventually led to the two clubs reaching a final agreement.
Guimaraes’ desire to move to Arsenal also helped the discussions progress. The Brazil international is understood to have been keen to wear the north London club’s shirt, supporting efforts to bring all sides towards a conclusion.
The potential signing represents another significant move by Arteta and Arsenal as they seek to improve the quality of their squad and increase competition for places. Arteta had previously hinted that the club was working actively in the transfer market, with the management determined to strengthen the team and maintain its ability to compete for every available trophy.
Guimaraes has established himself as one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders during his time at Newcastle United. He continued to produce influential performances last season, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists in all competitions.
His expected arrival would further increase Arsenal’s ambitions as they look to retain the Premier League title and compete strongly in the UEFA Champions League.
