Anass Salah-Eddine has rejected the prospect of joining Olympiacos, despite the Greek club believing it had reached an agreement to sign the versatile left-back from PSV Eindhoven.
The two clubs had reportedly agreed a transfer worth several million euros, with Salah-Eddine given permission to leave PSV. However, the proposed move does not fit the player’s wishes, and he appears to have different plans for the next stage of his career.
Salah-Eddine spent last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, where his performances led the Dutch club to consider a longer-term relationship. PSV saw enough during the successful loan spell to explore the possibility of keeping the defender beyond the temporary arrangement.
The player, however, was understood to be focused on taking his opportunity at Roma. That expectation has now become less certain after Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini assessed his options and began looking at alternative profiles for the wide positions.
One of the players reportedly attracting Roma’s attention is Feyenoord’s Givairo Read. The highly-rated full-back is viewed as a priority target, particularly because of the demands Gasperini places on his wing-backs. Read’s pace is regarded as one of the qualities that has made him an appealing option.
Those developments have helped create uncertainty around Salah-Eddine’s next destination. Olympiacos believed it had put the main elements of a deal in place, but the former Ajax academy player was not convinced by the move. As a result, the agreement has not led to a transfer.
Real Betis has also been mentioned as a possible destination for Salah-Eddine. That interest remains at an early stage, with the situation far from being finalised.
The uncertainty may explain why PSV remains open to further interest in Salah-Eddine, even though the reigning champions are already examining other possibilities for the position. PSV has made an offer for Filip Kostic, but the player has yet to respond.
For now, PSV is not considering a direct move to bring Salah-Eddine back on a permanent basis. The club’s interest in Kostic and its search for alternative options suggest that no decision has been made over the left-back’s future.
Salah-Eddine’s situation therefore remains unresolved. Olympiacos has seen its proposed deal stall, the possibility of a move to Roma has become less clear, and Real Betis has not yet taken the interest beyond the stage of being discussed as a potential option.
