Al-Merreikh SC are preparing for a decisive derby against rivals Al-Hilal Omdurman with the Sudanese league title set to be determined in Wednesday’s final round of the Elite League.
The match, scheduled for 10 June, represents the concluding stage of the Sudanese Premier League season and could crown Al-Merreikh champions.
Both sides enter the contest level on 18 points after winning all of their previous matches in the competition. However, Al-Merreikh hold the advantage on goal difference, meaning a draw would be enough for them to secure the title.
Despite having two possible outcomes in their favour, coach Darko Novic has reportedly rejected any cautious strategy and intends to approach the derby with an attacking mindset.
The Serbian manager has decided to field what is considered his strongest available starting line-up rather than adopting a defensive approach designed simply to preserve the point required for the championship.
Novic’s decision follows a series of convincing performances from his side in recent matches, which helped Al-Merreikh climb to the top of the standings on goal difference ahead of the decisive encounter.
The coach has also received a further boost with the return of Zambian professional Obinu Chisala, whose availability has strengthened the squad options ahead of the derby.
Reports from inside the club suggest Novic has now settled on the line-up he believes is best suited to deliver victory in the high-pressure fixture.
The expected starting side includes Jaras Kafi in goal, while the defensive line is likely to feature Daouda Ba, Musab Makin, Daba Souguba and Ahmed Abdel Moneim.
In midfield, Gedi Fatkoun, Mutaz Hashim and Nicholas Randria are expected to start, while the attacking trio could consist of Mubarak Abdullah, Abubakar Bangoura and Mohamed Asad.
The team’s preparations have reportedly included intensive meetings and motivational sessions as players and staff seek to reclaim the league title and restore confidence around the club.
Club captain Ramadan Agab, who is set to miss the derby, has nevertheless played a prominent role in encouraging his team-mates ahead of the decisive match.
Within the club, victory is being viewed as carrying significance beyond simply winning the championship.
Officials and players believe lifting the title would strengthen belief in the current project, restore confidence among supporters and confirm the club’s return to competitiveness after several difficult seasons.
A successful campaign could also lead to increased backing from fans in future competitions, while the administration led by president Mujahid Sahl is expected to continue supporting the squad amid rising ambitions at the club.
The derby is scheduled to kick off at 4:45pm Mecca time, corresponding to 3:45pm local time, and will be broadcast on Sudan TV.
With the title at stake and long-standing rivalry adding further intensity, the meeting between Al-Merreikh and Al-Hilal is expected to deliver one of the most significant fixtures of the Sudanese football season.
