Al-Ahli Saudi have opened discussions with former Leipzig head coach Ole Werner as they search for a successor to Matthias Jaissle.
Werner has emerged as a leading candidate to take charge of the Saudi club after Jaissle, his fellow German, recently left his position. Al-Ahli’s management is now assessing the possibility of appointing Werner before the start of the new season.
According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, contact has already been established between Al-Ahli and Werner as the club attempts to resolve its coaching situation. The move is part of a wider effort to appoint a new head coach before preparations for the upcoming campaign begin.
The club’s executive committee has reportedly received initial approval from the German coach to take charge. However, negotiations over the contractual details still need to be completed before a final agreement can be reached.
Al-Ahli are keen to conclude the process as quickly as possible. The club wants the incoming manager to oversee the final stages of preparations and have sufficient time to work with the squad ahead of the new season.
The campaign will be a demanding one for Al-Ahli, known by their nickname “Al-Raqi”, with the club set to compete in more than one domestic and continental competition. Securing a new head coach is therefore viewed as an immediate priority for the club’s administration.
Werner’s name has become prominent after Al-Ahli considered several potential candidates in recent days. The club are searching for a manager with a strong personality who can continue the team’s football project and maintain its ambition to challenge for every available trophy during the forthcoming season.
The possible appointment would represent another change in the dugout for Al-Ahli following Jaissle’s departure. Werner, who previously managed Leipzig, is now under consideration as the club seeks stability and continuity while planning for the new campaign.
The negotiations remain ongoing, with the contractual elements still to be settled. Until those discussions are concluded, Werner’s appointment cannot be regarded as final, although the initial contact and reported approval have placed him firmly among the leading options.
Al-Ahli’s priority is to bring the managerial process to a close soon, allowing the new coach to take responsibility for the team’s preparations rather than joining only after the season has begun. The club’s search reflects its intention to preserve its competitiveness across all the competitions in which it will participate.
